The Holy Spirit also gives us joy – not just superficial happiness, but “inner confidence” that all is well because of our place in Christ. Serving children can be chaotic and tiring, yet we can have a deep, lasting joy.
When a child laughs at a funny story or learns a new song, let those moments remind you that God’s goodness is at work. This joy is a gift from Jesus that sustains us even on difficult days.
As you prepare lessons or patiently explain a verse, let the joy of the Lord be your strength.
"Rejoice in the Lord always." – Philippians 4:4
In the Christian faith, joy and happiness are related but distinct concepts. Happiness is a temporary emotion that comes from external circumstances like success and pleasure. It feels good and can make people experiencing it feel, “on top of the world.” However, it can be present for weeks and gone in an instant.
Joy, on the other hand, is a deeper sense of contentment and well-being that comes from within and is not dependent on external circumstances. True joy is constant and present in every moment, whether we realize it or not—whether we choose it or not.
As Christians, we teach that joy is a practice and behavior that comes from within—an attitude of the heart—a Fruit of the Spirit gifted after having disciplined oneself to be in line with the teachings of Christ. It is important to note, however, that joy is NOT exclusive to Christians.
In tough times, we can still experience joy, as joy can coexist with other emotions such as sadness, fear, anger, and even unhappiness. True joy is limitless, life-defining, and life-transforming. It brings meaning and purpose to life and is essential to overcoming the obstacles and suffering we may encounter in our lives and the world.
Journal Prompt
Write about a moment today when you felt joy at VBS. What about that experience made you grateful? How can you carry a sense of God’s joy with you when you go home each day?
Challenge
Share your joy by smiling, laughing with the children, and celebrating small victories. Maybe teach a silly Bible song with enthusiasm or point out something beautiful in God’s creation. Let your positive attitude encourage those around you.
Prayer
Jesus, fill our hearts with Your joy. Help us to reflect Your delight in each child. When we feel tired or discouraged, remind us of Your presence and purpose so we can “glory in hope” through Your joy. Amen.
Afternoon Encouragement
"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing [through the experience of your faith] that by the power of the Holy Spirit you will abound in hope and overflow with confidence in His promises." –Romans 15:13
When emotions run high, energy is low, or doubt sneaks in, choose faith over feelings. You may feel stretched today, but you’re not alone. God is your source of strength, and the joy of the Lord is your strength. Joy isn’t about surface-level happiness; it’s the deep, unshakable confidence in God's goodness, even when things don’t go perfectly.
Today, let the good vibes flow—not from the energy around you, but from the joy planted deep within you by the Holy Spirit. When the schedule feels packed and the noise level rises, press pause and remember: ✨ Joy is your superpower. ✨ Joy is your fuel. ✨ Joy is your testimony.
This joy doesn’t come from things going perfectly. It’s rooted in your trust in God’s promises. Even when your feet are tired and your patience is tested, faith over feelings is the vibe we’re choosing. Let God’s joy rise up and overflow from your heart to every child, every team member, every moment.
Let your joy be contagious. Let your good vibes point to a good God.
Prayer Focus
Ask God to strengthen your faith and fill your heart with joy that overflows. Pray for a spirit that lifts others and stands firm, even when the day gets tough.
